The spiritual heart of the Himalayas is once again open to devotees as the Char Dham Yatra 2026 officially gets underway. Following the traditional opening of the Yamunotri and Gangotri shrines on April 19, the spotlight now shifts to Kedarnath, whose gates are scheduled to open tomorrow morning, April 22. Badrinath will complete the sacred circuit by welcoming pilgrims starting April 23.
To manage the massive influx of visitors and ensure safety, the Uttarakhand government has mandated a compulsory registration process for every pilgrim. Beyond the primary web portal, travelers can secure their permits via a dedicated WhatsApp service or through the “Tourist Care Uttarakhand” mobile application. Authorities have clarified that without a valid registration QR code, entry beyond base camps will not be permitted.
For those planning to reach Kedarnath via air, the IRCTC HeliYatra platform remains the exclusive authorized channel for booking shuttle services. Pilgrims must first complete their shrine registration before they are eligible to book flight slots from helipads like Guptkashi, Phata, or Sirsi. Due to high demand, travelers are encouraged to book well in advance and remain wary of unauthorized third-party vendors.
The 2026 season also sees an increased focus on health and crowd logistics. New protocols include mandatory health screenings for vulnerable groups and GPS tracking to monitor the flow of the Yatra in real-time. As the journey follows a high-altitude route from Yamunotri to Badrinath, pilgrims are urged to carry adequate winter gear and follow the official health advisories to mitigate the risks associated with the steep Himalayan terrain.
