JOALI Maldives proudly announces its achievement of the EarthCheck Gold Certification, marking a significant milestone in the resort’s ongoing commitment to responsible travel and environmental stewardship.
EarthCheck leads the way in scientific benchmarking, certification, and advisory services for sustainable travel and tourism. It sets international standards for sustainability. Tourism businesses earn the Gold Certification by consistently meeting EarthCheck’s rigorous standards for five consecutive years, demonstrating their long-term commitment to sustainable practices across their operations.
Achieving this milestone for its fifth consecutive year of certification, JOALI Maldives has demonstrated unwavering consistency in meeting and exceeding global best practices in key areas, including energy efficiency, waste reduction, water conservation, and community engagement.

“From the very beginning, sustainability has been at the heart of JOALI Maldives’ story,” said Shifaz Hassan, General Manager of JOALI Maldives. “This recognition by EarthCheck is a reflection of the passion and purpose of our team, from the way we build and operate, to how we nurture our island community and preserve the natural wonders that surround us.”
At the core of JOALI Maldives’ sustainability journey lies the “Joy of Caring” initiative — the brand’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability program built around four key pillars that promote environmental preservation, community support, and conscious practices within and beyond the resort.
Through initiatives like the JOALI Reef Restoration Project, the resort has taken tangible steps to protect and regenerate marine life. In the past year alone, the project has reached 535 guests through awareness sessions, 122 children through outreach programs, and given over 5,000 coral fragments a second life beneath the waves.
Across the island, a culture of mindful action guides every operation. Despite the introduction of new facilities and villas, JOALI Maldives recorded a 4% increase in energy use and a 16% reduction in waste this year. The JOALI Glass Water Bottling Plant produced over 402,000 glass bottles in 2024, eliminating single-use plastics. Sustainable practices include eco-friendly villa amenities, on-site composting, and wastewater recycling. Partnering with organisations such as Securebag Maldives, the resort recycles and upcycles materials into decorative items and construction materials. In contrast, excess compost and reusable materials are shared with local farmers and nearby islands across the Raa Atoll.
Every action reflects JOALI Maldives’ belief that true luxury can exist in harmony with nature. By blending design, art, and purpose, the resort continues to create meaningful change for guests, the local community, and the planet.
For travellers seeking experiences that are both beautiful and responsible, the EarthCheck Gold Certification serves as a trusted symbol, affirming that JOALI Maldives has undergone a rigorous, science-based, and people-focused sustainability certification process and continues to make decisions that conserve resources, support local communities, and protect the environment.
