Mela Kothi – Chambal Safari Lodge, a historic eco-lodge in Uttar Pradesh’s Chambal Valley, is the latest addition to RARE India’s collection of boutique hospitality experiences.

Independently owned boutique hotels, wildlife lodges, heritage residences and retreats across India are represented by RARE India, an organisation founded by Shoba Rudra in 2003. Mela Kothi’s inclusion solidifies the company’s commitment to providing community-based and conservation-led hospitality experiences.

Situated close to Jarar, approximately one hour away from Agra, the land grants access to the Chambal Valley, a riverine environment renowned for its flora and fauna.

Ram Pratap Singh and environmental scientist Anu Singh rebuilt the property, which was originally built in the late 19th century as a camp office for a livestock show. A twenty-year-long effort has transformed the property into an eco-lodge that promotes sustainable tourism, local involvement, and environmental restoration.

“Restoring Mela Kothi was never just about reviving a historic property; it was about allowing the land to heal and creating a meaningful connection between conservation, community, and hospitality,” commented Ram Pratap Singh, creator of Mela Kothi Chambal Safari Lodge, in response to the collaboration. Nature and local economies have flourished together throughout the years, which has strengthened our conviction that tourism should be sustainable, local, and responsible. It is with great pleasure that we announce our partnership with RARE, a travel organization whose mission and values are highly congruent with our own.

Sustainable practices in environmental management, conservation, and community development are at the heart of the lodge’s operations. Community members receive about 67% of the site’s economic benefit in the form of jobs, training, and collaborations, as stated on the property.

The National Chambal Sanctuary, which is accessible through the lodge, is a haven for over 330 different bird species, as well as marsh crocodiles, smooth-coated otters, endangered gharials, and Gangetic river dolphins. You can go on river safaris, see birds, ride on bike paths, take nature hikes, and even visit local villages.

Mela Kothi is the latest addition to RARE India’s portfolio of conservation-and culture-focused history, wildlife, and experience tourist locations.
