As the world turns its gaze toward mindful living and spiritual travel, Uttar Pradesh—India’s cultural heartland—emerges as a timeless sanctuary for seekers, pilgrims, and travelers. A land where history, divinity, and heritage converge, Uttar Pradesh is not only home to the iconic Taj Mahal and the ghats of Varanasi but also the cradle of Buddhism. In this sacred soil, Lord Buddha walked, meditated, preached, and attained Mahaparinirvana.
The Department of Tourism, Government of Uttar Pradesh is actively welcoming global travelers to explore its sacred Buddhist circuit, offering an experience through some of the most spiritually and historically significant destinations on the planet. This path doesn’t merely trace the footsteps of the Buddha—it invites you to reflect, awaken and transform.
Kapilvastu: The Awakening of a Prince
In ancient Kapilvastu, nestled in the Terai plains, the story of Siddhartha Gautama—the prince who would become the Buddha —begins. Siddhartha, born into royal luxury, initiated his spiritual journey after encountering four significant instances of suffering. At the age of 29, he took the monumental step of Mahabhinishkramana—the Great Renunciation—shedding his worldly life in search of eternal truth. Today, Piprahwa Stupa and Ganwaria stand as serene markers of this philosophical birth, drawing visitors into a realm where introspection triumphs over indulgence.

Sarnath: Turning the Wheel of Dharma
It was in Sarnath, amidst the quietude of the Deer Park, that the enlightened Buddha gave his first sermon, setting in motion the Dhammacakkappavattana—”the Wheel of Dharma.” Here, he introduced the Four Noble Truths and the Middle Way, planting the seeds of a global faith. Pilgrims today are welcomed by the towering Dhamek Stupa, the Ashoka Pillar and many Buddhist temples.
Shravasti: Sanctuary of the Sangha
In the verdant tranquillity of Shravasti, Lord Buddha spent 25 monsoon seasons at Jetavana Monastery, sharing wisdom and offering refuge. It is also here that a dramatic spiritual transformation occurred—the redemption of Angulimala, a feared bandit who became a peaceful monk, exemplifying Buddhism’s boundless compassion. With the sacred Anand Bodhi Tree still standing, Shravasti calls upon those who seek redemption, stillness, and second chances.
Sankisa: The Divine Descent
Few places stir the soul, like Sankisa, the site of Lord Buddha’s miraculous descent from Tushita Heaven, accompanied by celestial beings. This act of divine filial piety—teaching the Abhidhamma to his mother—underscores the Buddha’s profound humanity and reverence for all beings. The legendary triple staircase is no longer visible, yet its spirit lives on in the reverent energy that envelops Sankisa.
Kaushambi: Dialogues of Wisdom
Once a prosperous capital, Kaushambi became a hub of spiritual discourse during the time of the Buddha. At Ghositarama Monastery, he engaged kings and commoners alike, resolving disputes and guiding monks toward harmony. His visits brought peace to the city, demonstrating that the Buddha’s presence could uplift both the powerful and the humble.
Kushinagar: The Final Journey
In the quiet town of Kushinagar, beneath twin Sal trees, the Buddha lay down for his final rest, attaining Mahaparinirvana at the age of 80. His last words, “All compounded things are subject to decay. Strive with diligence,” echo through time. Today, the Ramabhar Stupa and Mahaparinirvana Temple stand as solemn reminders of life’s impermanence and the enduring light of enlightenment.
Director General and Principal Secretary, Department of Tourism, GoUP, Mukesh Kumar Meshram (IAS), said under the guidance of Minister of Tourism & Culture, GoUP, Shri Jaiveer Singh, state is redefining spiritual tourism for the modern traveller. With enhanced infrastructure, international-standard hospitality, and a strong commitment to safety and sustainability the Uttar Pradesh is offering diverse tourism opportunities. Pilgrims, scholars, and inquisitive explorers embark on a journey that takes them both inward and outward. As the world embraces healing, wellness, and meaning in travel, Uttar Pradesh stands ready to welcome global visitors to its sacred fold—where every footprint becomes a step towards enlightenment.
