FLY91, a pure-play regional airline, has introduced UPI payments for inflight purchases, including hot meals and beverages. These can be pre-booked right until the time of boarding, making it the first regional airline in India and one of very few in the world to offer this convenience.
FLY91’s consistent digital-first approach and focus on innovation aim to redefine passenger experience with its focus on ease, choice, and digital excellence. It also provides passengers with a warm meal, snacks, beverages, and other services on flight. Offering hot meals on board, especially in short-duration sectors, is rare and upgrades passengers’ inflight experience.
In most airlines, meals must be booked or paid for in cash while purchasing the ticket. In contrast, FLY91 allows passengers to pre-book their meals right up until they board the flight. Passengers can pre-book or purchase their meals at multiple touchpoints on the day of travel. Once inside the aircraft, they can scan a QR code placed at check-in counters, boarding gates, or in the seat-back pocket. Payments can be made seamlessly via UPI before the door closes at departure, offering flexibility in payment options.
The introduction of UPI payments is just one example of how FLY91, a digital native airline, is leveraging innovation and technology for better efficiency and smoother customer experience; apart from auto check-in facilities, the use of fuel-efficient ATR aircraft, using bots instead of call centres for customer interaction, maintaining paperless offices, etc.
Manoj Chacko, MD and CEO of FLY91 said, “As a regional carrier, our focus has always been enhancing the overall travel experience through practical innovation using an easy-to-use digital framework. Introducing UPI-based digital payments on board is a step towards offering our passengers greater convenience, flexibility, and warm meals. FLY91’s digital-first initiative reflects our commitment to a seamless and cashless journey while continuing to deliver quality service—even on short-haul regional routes.”
As part of its onboard service, FLY91 offers a thoughtfully curated buy-on-board menu featuring a selection of ready-to-eat hot meals such as poha, upma, dal rice, biryani and noodles. Passengers can also enjoy hot beverages, including a variety of teas and coffees, as well as light snacks like masala and jalapeño-flavoured ragi chips served with cheese and mayo dip, assorted cashew nuts and almonds, and a pack of cookies in flavours such as choco almond, choco cashew and peanut butter. A range of juices is also available, including apple delight, tangy bimble, mango, jamun and aam panna. All the offerings on the menu are reasonably priced.
Operational from March 2024, FLY91 currently connects Goa with Pune, Hyderabad, Sindhudurg, Jalgaon and Agatti (Lakshadweep) and operates its growing fleet of ATR 72-600 aircraft from its base at Manohar International Airport, Goa. With plans to connect over 50 cities across India over the next five years, FLY91 continues to focus on making regional flying seamless, efficient and customer-first.
