The historic seaside village of Mahabalipuram is now home to the five-room coastal cottage known as Isai Karai, which has been opened by CGH Earth Saha. The boutique hideaway, nestled in one of India’s most renowned heritage landscapes, offers a perfect combination of modern hospitality with the charm and seclusion of a traditional bungalow, all within walking distance of the beach.

Isai Karai, which translates to “musical shore,” provides a peaceful retreat with a view of the Bay of Bengal, surrounded by verdant vegetation and lulled to sleep by the soothing waves. A perfect synthesis of nature, history, and subtle luxury awaits guests at this property, which is just 50 metres from the beach and near several of Mahabalipuram’s famous attractions, such as the gigantic rock relief of Arjuna’s Penance and the UNESCO-listed Shore Temple.

With five rooms spread over a main dwelling with three bedrooms and a separate unit with two bedrooms, this property is perfect for both solo travellers and small parties looking for a cosy beach getaway. With their own private bathrooms that let in plenty of natural light and foliage, the rooms take design cues from the local flora. A tranquil garden space that opens out to the sea wind is created by stone walks, shaded courtyards, and fruit trees such as papaya, mango, and star fruit.

The bungalow’s interiors are a tribute to the creative heritage of Mahabalipuram; they feature handpicked art, locally sourced stone, and brilliant hues. Fresh seafood is the star of the show, but the kitchen also offers bespoke meals with flavours reminiscent of the Tamil coast. The day’s fish is barbecued in a casual garden setting at the poolside barbecue as the evening unfolds.
