A new Pan-Asian restaurant called RYU OKA, which draws inspiration from the historical Silk Road and its cultural and gastronomic exchanges, has opened at the Grand Dragon Ladakh.

As a speciality restaurant, RYU OKA aims to provide an Asian dining experience that is deeply rooted in Ladakh’s cultural and geographical identity. The Central Asian Museum in Leh and the transcontinental trade routes that carried various cuisines and traditions are the sources of inspiration for the restaurant’s concept.

“The idea for RYU OKA evolved through an exploration of Silk Route history at Leh’s Central Asian Museum, where the movement of cultures and cuisines across borders became the conceptual foundation for the restaurant,” explained Anjum Qadir, A member of the Abdu family behind The Grand Dragon Ladakh and Creative Lead of RYU OKA. The goal was not to create a fusion concept but to honour the uniqueness of Asian cuisines while letting the rhythm and landscape of Ladakh subtly influence the dining experience.

Using carefully chosen local ingredients like apricot, barley, sea buckthorn, and buckwheat, the menu showcases dishes that draw inspiration from the cuisines of Japan, Korea, Thailand, China, and Bali.

“Although Ladakhi cuisine has naturally absorbed influences over centuries through trade and travel, it has always retained its own simplicity and identity,” noted Anjum Qadir, Creative Lead, RYU OKA and member of the Abdu family behind The Grand Dragon Ladakh. Avoiding superfluous fusion was our goal in preserving the integrity of Ladakhi and Asian cuisines. The intention was to build a well-considered Pan-Asian experience that would enhance Ladakh rather than undermine it.

The decor of the eatery is a fusion of Ladakhi artistry and Wabi-Sabi style, which draws inspiration from Japan. Repurposed wood and hand-painted textures influenced by the local mountain scenery are also part of the project.

The Grand Dragon Ladakh has increased its food and drink selection and bolstered Ladakh’s premium hospitality and experiential dining scene with the opening of RYU OKA.
