Mumbai – Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts, who run five resorts in the Maldives now; have been dedicated to sustainability since their establishment. Currently three of its resorts have been awarded the Green Globe certification – OBLU Helengeli (Nov 2019);
OZEN by Atmosphere at Maadhoo (Nov 2019) and OBLU Select at Sangeli (Jan 2020). This Certification is measured as one of the first globally-working programs for the conservation of people and nature, with a local focus. The certification was planned particularly for the travel and tourism industry and it has been giving since the early 1990s.
For Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts, sustainability signifies managing the resorts along with the company and guiding core values, which are to be conscious of and take liability for global environmental problems. The resorts have been run in a sustainable way from the inception and significant steps have been taken to reduce the impact that functioning the Resorts has on the environment. For example, all resorts use glass bottles for drinking water, which are developed in the resort’s own facilities. Plastic straws are barred and floating solar panels – now only at OZEN by Atmosphere – generate their own electricity to power the resort. Solar panel power generation will be installed in all resorts shortly. Guests are actively urged to protect nature and the nearby underwater world to support further protect the environment. Also, the Maldivian culture and heritage is shared at the resorts, to make sure it is known and protected.
The Green Globe certification procedure is complex and precise. We provide special teams of staff at every resort to make sure that the resort sticks to the certification criteria. The accountable teams have to work through more than 300 certification criteria carefully, taking into account different factors for example, sustainability, protection of cultural heritage, social and economic reflections and environmental security. As the Maldives is one of the most endangered tourist destinations in the world, environmental preservation and sustainability has always been a major element to our operations and essential in all that we do. Since the establishment of Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts in 2013, we have worked to become increasingly sustainable.
“We are thrilled to be part of the Green Globe community, with three resorts currently certified, and the others well on their way. I am very proud of all the resort teams who have worked immensely hard to achieve this certification,” said Giri Venkat, Chief Operating Officer and President of Atmosphere Hotels Resorts.
