As global tourism shifts toward responsible travel and immersive experiences, India is responding with a renewed focus on sustainable destination development. The Government of India’s Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0) programme represents a key step. It aims to transform tourism circuits into responsible, community-driven destinations. These changes balance visitor experiences with environmental and cultural preservation.
The Swadesh Darshan Scheme (SDS) was first launched during 2014–15 to build thematic tourism circuits across India. In this phase, the Ministry of Tourism approved 76 projects, totalling an investment of ₹5,290.30 crore. These projects covered heritage, coastal, spiritual, rural, and desert tourism themes.
