Spread over an area of ​​about 757.90 square kilometers in the southern foothills of the Satpura range, on the border of the states of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. It was declared a protected area under the Tiger Reserve Scheme in 1983. Later, in 1992, it was declared as “Indira Priyadarshini Pench National Park” (or “Mowgli Pench”).

The name “Pench” National Park comes from the name of the Pench River. This river flows between Chhindwara district and Seoni district.

Based on the notes written by Sir William Henry Sleeman, Rudyard Kipling wrote his famous book The Jungle Book. It is a famous work all over the world. The character “Mowgli” in it is very popular.

In fact, there are said to be incidents that are the basis for the story of the Jungle Book. These incidents are believed to have taken place around 1831 in a village called “San Pauni” in Seoni district.

Some of the events in the book are said to have taken place in Kanhiwada village and the Seoni hills when Mowgli roamed the Wainganga River in Seoni and killed Sher Khan.
