NHPC signed two MoUs for the development of “Pilot Green Hydrogen Technologies” in District Leh and District Kargil of UT of Ladakh on 14th July 2022. The MoUs were signed in the presence of Shri R.K. Mathur, Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, UT of Ladakh.

As per the MoU signed for District Leh, NHPC shall consider the development of a Pilot Green Hydrogen fuel cell based Microgrid, including Hydrogen production, to meet the power requirement of NHPC guest house at Nimmo Bazgo Power Station (Leh) within NHPC premises. 

As per the MoU for District Kargil, the hydrogen generated will be used in fuel cells for mobility, which will be capable of running two buses for up to 8 hrs, in the local area of Kargil.

NHPC shall upscale hydrogen production on a commercial scale to meet the hydrogen demand in the Ladakh region, in different sectors like mobility, transportation, heating, Micro-grid and subsequent MoUs shall be signed separately.

These two pilot projects will create the roadmap for the future development of Green Hydrogen and the subsequent reduction of carbon emission in the transportation/heating sector. It will also attract long term investment in the hydrogen economy, thus creating different revenue streams and job opportunities for the youth of Ladakh.
