Jamaica has cemented its status as a global tourism powerhouse, securing six prestigious honours at the 2026 Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA) International Travel Awards. Highlighting the evening, Jamaica was named the “Destination of the Year” during a ceremony held at the 26th PATWA World Tourism Leaders’ Summit. The accolades were presented on the sidelines of ITB Berlin, the world’s leading travel trade show, signalling a major triumph for the island’s tourism sector on the international stage.
In addition to the national recognition, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, was awarded as the Tourism Minister of the Year (Worldwide). This global honour acknowledges Minister Bartlett’s transformative leadership and his tireless advocacy for tourism resilience and sustainable development, further solidifying Jamaica’s role as a pioneer in the international travel landscape.
Reacting to the recognition, Minister Bartlett described the award as a reflection of the collective efforts that continue to strengthen Jamaica’s tourism sector.
“This award belongs to the people of Jamaica, to our workers, our partners and every stakeholder who contributes to making our island a world-class destination,” Bartlett said, noting that the recognition reinforces the country’s commitment to resilience, innovation and sustainable tourism development.
The recognition of Jamaica’s hospitality and infrastructure sectors further underscored the island’s diverse appeal. S Hotel Jamaica, under the leadership of CEO Christopher Issa, earned the PATWA International Travel Award for Excellence in Hospitality Innovation, while also being named among the Best Boutique Hotels – Authentic Experiences (Caribbean).
Furthermore, the Montego Bay Convention Centre (MBCC) was honoured for its regional leadership in the meetings and events sector. Led by Executive Director Mureen James, the MBCC remains a cornerstone of Jamaica’s strategy to dominate the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) market, reinforcing the island’s reputation as a premier destination for international business travel.
Commenting on the recognition, Director of Tourism Donovan White noted that the awards underscore the global appeal of Jamaica’s tourism product.
“Being named Destination of the Year by PATWA is a significant milestone for Brand Jamaica. It highlights the confidence the international community has in our tourism product and the dedication of the people who deliver exceptional visitor experiences,” White said.
Complementing these achievements, Jamaica is also advancing efforts to strengthen air connectivity across the island. Officials from the Airports Authority of Jamaica have been exploring opportunities to expand international airlift through Ian Fleming International Airport, located near Ocho Rios, to improve access to the north coast. The airport currently operates twice-weekly flights from Miami. Expanded connectivity through the facility is expected to support tourism development across nearby destinations including St. Ann, St. Mary and Portland, while complementing Jamaica’s primary gateways in Montego Bay and Kingston.
