In November 2024, India’s domestic aviation sector reached a new milestone, with passenger departures exceeding 500,000 in a single day. This surge was driven by the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, highlighting the increasing significance of spiritual tourism.
“While expanded flights and adjusted fares were essential, airlines must ensure pricing remains fair to sustain long-term growth,” states Jaideep Mirchandani, Group Chairman of Sky One.
The expansion of spiritual tourism is not confined to major events. According to a report from Markets and Data, India’s religious tourism market is expected to grow from US$ 202.85 billion to US$ 441.19 billion at a CAGR of 10.2%. Airlines are already taking advantage of this trend; new flights now connect Ayodhya, Khajuraho, Deoghar, Amritsar, and Kishangarh (Ajmer) under the RCS-UDAN scheme.
Mirchandani points out that young travelers and group pilgrimages are driving new demand. “With increasing internet penetration, younger generations are eager to explore religious sites. Airlines should offer special packages and partner with tourism organizations to maximize this opportunity,” he concludes.
